Misplaced Confidence?

The confidence vote tomorrow. And I have split loyalties. I hate the Congress party as such but have something of a soft corner for Manmohan Singh, one of the few educated and sensible politicians in India. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

Currently reading "My Country, My Life" - L.K.Advani. Nice book. Good read. Something like reading a contemporary history textbook. Everything that's happened affecting India in the last 80 years from his viewpoint.

PS: This was a short post to check the viability of blogging from my college' internet facilities in the hostel. Speeds are poor. Good enough for browsing and staying connected though !

Kuselan Music Review : A different Rajini album

Got hold of the songs today morning. I'm quite a fan of GV Prakash's brand of music these days. Reminds me of AR Rahman at many places. Must be a cheaper alternative to AR Rahman to most directors. [:-)]. Being a different kind-off Rajini movie, I was expecting a different kind-off album from GV Prakash and he has done the same almost. You can call it an offbeat Rajini album as it doesn't have the intro song of Rajini etc. Probably the movie didn't require one ! [:)]

Here's my review after around 4-5 listens of the full album since the morning amidst my mom's screamings to reduce the volume of the speakers[:D].

1)Cinema Cinema
Artist(s): Shankar Mahadevan
Lyricist: Vaali

Sounds like the many Harris Jeyaraj "Chinese/Japanese" Themes in the beginning. But there ends the similarity. Another song praising Rajini to the hilt.

"எவரு ஒளைசாலும் உயர்ந்திடலாம் .. அதுக்கு எடுத்துகாட்டு நம்ம சினிமா தான் .. அதுக்கு யாரு சாட்சி நா அது வேறு யாரு நம்ம தலைவர் தான் ".

"Superstar Superstar" Shankar Mahadevan keeps screaming out - The stanza which was picturised in Shanthi theatre is sure to send fans into raptures with lyrics praising Rajini's simplicity and stuff. Vaali has chosen his words carefully and P.Vasu has sure got the right man for the lyrics. With Rajini in just a small role, P. Vasu has used the songs and the lyrics to the best possible level in order to capture the attention of the fans. Good composition on the whole. Listenable at best and a whole lot depends on the picturisation for its reach.

Verdict: 8/10

Artist(s): Hariharan, Sujatha, Baby Ranjini, Baby Pooja
Lyricist: Pa. Vijay

Very Melodious at the start - Hariharan's voice is really soothing and with Sujatha at her best too, the song is superb to listen. The song's lyrics keep going about "ஏழை". Probably picturised on Pasupathy - who is a barber in the movie. Quite long at over 6 minutes in total though. I have a feeling that the starting few seconds are so so similar to "Kaatre En Vaasal" from Rythm. Any one sharing my views?[:)] The flutist is at his best through out the song esp. near the middle of the song.( Near the 2 minute mark)

Verdict: 8.5/10

3)Om Zaarare
Artist(s): Daler Mehndi, Chitra, Sadhana Sargam
Lyricist: Vaali

"போக்கிரி ராஜா நீ பொல்லாதவன் .. பாயும் புலி .. சந்திரமுகி .. தில்லு முள்ளு .. படையப்பா .. "
the song goes on with more names of Rajini movie titles looking it more like a die-hard Rajini fans's Orkut "About Me".[:p].Daler Mehndi's diction is passable. Tune reminds you of "Vaaji Vaaji" from Shivaji at a few places. A tribute to Rajini I suppose which is sure to have his fans screaming their throats off. In most places, the music is loud and is such that you can hardly hear the lyric of Vaali - probably to hide the diction of Daler Mehndi [:p].

Verdict: 8/10

Artist(s): Shreya Ghoshal, Kids
Lyricist: Dr. Kridhaya

The song begins with a techno-ish beat. Shreya Ghoshal is as melodious as ever. [:D] The best song of the album IMO. Oh yeah, before I forget, this is the now-compulsary solo female track of every GVP album. A carnatic based composition from GVP. The Lyricist's name sounds new - a never before heard name I guess - but the lyrics are quite good. Yet another rain song for Tamil Cinema [:p] which will be picturised on Nayanthara I suppose. One of GVP's best melodies after "Akkam Pakkam" from Kireedom. The interludes are nice on the ear although they remind you of 80s music at places.

Verdict: 9/10

Artist(s): Kailash Kher, Prasanna
Lyricist: Yugabharathi

Kailash Kher is back here after "Rangu Rangamma" giving his voice in a similar kind of composition. The background beat reminds you of "Veyilodu Velaiyaadi" all through! He may be getting a bit repetitive here already![:o] Somemore "Superstar .. Superstar" in the lyrics which can be excused given it is more of a guest role for Rajini. Well, the similarity to "Veyillodu Velayaadi" made me loose enthusiasm to listen to the song repeatedly to write more about it. Yugabharathi's lyrics have nothing special to talk about.

Verdict: 7.5/10

Overall : Expected quite a lot from this one as GVP had no restrictions on his compositions unlike ARR in Shivaji where he had to put in the intro song and stuff like that inspite of which he innovated in "Style". GVP is getting a bit repetitive already which he has to sincerely try to avoid. But quite a good album for the ear with the typical melodies, fast paced songs etc. Most songs have an already heard feel and the album has too much of Rajini for a movie where he is just in a guest role. GVP, in trying to be ARRish is only ripping off from ARR himself sadly. Touches of Mudhalvan, Vaaji Vaaji are all there in the album. This just about passes muster for an album with quite a lot of expectations all though it is better than Himmesh's Dasavathaaram.[:p]

Verdict: 8.2/10

PS: I've made my marking a bit stricter these days[:p]. I suppose this is one of the first review os the album online as well.[:D]
